BUSINESS ITEMS
Uniform Overview--Mr. Mayers
Special guest, Mr. Corrado Ciapanna, Superintendent of Education, was welcomed by Principal, Mr. Mayers (Acting Chair in Mrs. Swick’s absence), on behalf of the Bishop Ryan School Council. Mr. Ciapanna stayed only for the duration of this first agenda item.
Mr. Ciapanna gave a brief background on the pro’s of school uniforms and how this gives all students a “level playing field”.
The board does not “approve” suppliers. School principals are provided with an original list of eleven suppliers, which the Board could recommend. The individual schools interview suppliers and formulate their own contracts. The Board has provided a standard, but stays at arm’s length. There is a “sweatshop free” policy in place, with suppliers signing a guarantee that off-shore sweatshops are not used. This improves worker conditions and supports the Board’s policy, as well as providing quality and service to purchasers. Supplier rebates to schools are to be used for families in need.
Mr. Szymkiewicz gave a brief historical summary of the issues. The uniform contract with Sportscor expired January 2009, with a verbal extension to June 2012. Mr. Mayers will inform Mr. Coruzzi of the Council’s decision to re-address the supplier issue. The next Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 30th, 2011. Vendors will be invited to make presentations hopefully in early April.
The Council thanked Mr. Ciapanna for the Board’s perspective.
Minutes of the Last Meeting--Mr. Mayers
Motion was made to approve the Minutes of January 19th, 2011 by Mr. Mayers and seconded by Mrs. Szymkiewicz.
Chair Report--The report was deferred due to Mrs. Swick being unavailable.
Parish Report--Angie Szymkiewicz
Our Lady of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church will be celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, 2011. Each family will be offered a celebratory booklet and free 8”x10” family photograph. There is no obligation and there is no cost to the church. Families are invited to sign up on the weekends of March 5th and 6th, as well as 12th and 13th.
JEPEG Update--Mr. Mayers reported in Mr. Pettorossi’s absence.
On Thursday, May 5th, 2011, at 7 pm, Dr. Jean Clinton will be speaking on The Adolescent Brain. This will be held at the Nicholas Mancini Centre.
A summary of ‘An Evening with Our Superintendents’ held on Thursday, February 3rd, was not available at this time.
Treasurer’s Report--Mrs. LeDonne
Today’s balance is $1,462. The previously reported account balance of $1,787, noted at the Council Meeting dated January 19th, 2011 was inaccurate. The correct balance at that time was $1,987.
Principal’s Report--Mr. Mayers
Hamilton’s Chief of Police, Glenn De Caire, gave a presentation at the recent Principals’ Meeting.
Mr. Mayers briefly discussed a safety incident involving a BR student.
Council was informed of a recent incident involving the BR Boys Football Team holding a practice on a Sunday, followed by the Team’s suspension for the rest of the season. There is a Board stipulation prohibiting any “organized” sport practices (i.e. formally organized by coaches with coaches present) on the Sabbath or other Holy Days. Games can be held however, possibly contributing to the misunderstanding. The suspension was examined by Board principals, with Mr. Mayers present, but deferring opinion to avoid a conflict of interest. Upon reflection and feedback by the group, the Team’s coaches were banned from practicing for the remainder of the year. The Team’s suspension was rescinded and they was were able to continue onto the Finals. The constitution for spring sports will outline to coaches that during the year, they are not to hold Sunday and Holy Day practices as well as describe the resulting consequences should they be in violation.

A school ski trip is scheduled for Friday, February 25th, and helmets will be required.
The school will offer two liturgies on Ash Wednesday, March 9th, but a priest will be unavailable.
Vice Principals’ Report--Mr. Silvestro
Online registration for next year’s courses will be available during February. If students are interested in a co-op or High Skills Major, their registrations are due by February 28th. Remaining subject registration is due Thursday, March 3rd. Mr. Silvestro strongly recommended that students register before the weekend of the 26th to avoid any possible system crash due to an overwhelming number registering. Mr. Silvestro will be sending out a Synre voice message to students’ homes. If their child has difficulty choosing, parents are encouraged to call the office for assistance. The Pathways To Success website outlines courses and their pre-requisites. It is recommended to not wait until the last weekend in February to avoid the possibility of the Trillium Website crashing.
The Literacy Test will be held on Thursday morning, March 31st for Grade 10’s and for those who did not succeed at their test previously. The buses will run as usual, but classes will start at noon. Non-testing students do not have to attend in the morning. The first practice tests will occur on March 1st and 2nd, and further practice tests March 22nd and 23rd.

JML return period of 30 days was added to the table, as well as the fact that the Bombardieri website could not be accessed by Mr. Szymkiewicz.
Some points that came up during the discussion of possible vendors were:
• Sportscorp is adding new products eg. styles for tops for girls
• Feedback on Sportscorp from students is positive
• New vendor JBC may not be Board approved
• Council should determine three main criteria that we as parents are interested in, possibly quality for money, style and variety, ease of ordering
• The quality control at Bombardieri is poor ie. same size pant or shirt may not have same dimensions every time
• Bombardieri storefront and service is not well liked
Staff members Ms. Byrne and Ms. Mazza prepared a report on the uniform issues, which generally puts our current supplier Sportscorp in a very positive light. They cite the in-school store, payment options, sufficient choice, reasonable prices, promotional items, and hiring of BR students.
It was decided that we will compare only McCarthy and Sportscorp to determine our next supplier. Mr. Szymkiewicz will prepare a list of specific concerns and question for Sportscor, forward these to Mrs. Robinson who will review and forward to Mrs. Toth and Mr. Mayers.

SmartBoard is made up of a laptop computer connected to a projector which projects onto a touch-screen. Computer files from the laptop as well as Internet sites can be projected onto the SmartBoard. The Board can be drawn or written on and erased. For example, graphs can be plotted, and answers can be filled in using a non ink pen. Thus students have the ability to access these interactive educational sites in the classroom setting, as well as at home.
A CPS clicker can be given to each student to input their answer to multiple choice questions. Answers can be tabulated, and teachers can view the answers given by each student. The particular model presented has a price of approx. $4500. Other products that do the same job are also available at a lower cost. This will be investigated by staff. Staff members will be visiting a school which has a number of these types of boards available in classrooms.

Parish Report by Mrs. Szymkiewicz
Council will try to address the lack of connection between the church and the school. Because many of our students are from Assumption Church, we will try to have Father Jim Petrie more involved with our school either by attending meetings or saying mass with the school. Priests may be included in activities beside mass to help students become more comfortable with them and to help build a relationship. Music may be used as a way to interest students.
Priests from feeder school parishes have been invited to say mass at BR. Masses are usually said at the beginning of the school year, Advent, Ash Wednesday, Easter, and at the end of the school year. Mass must be said twice in order to accommodate all students. Schedule is arranged with the help of the chaplain.
Principal’s Report by Mr. Mayers
Mold was found in the building. The School Board has spent $120 000 to clean up the building. Ducts have been vacuumed and scrubbed. The air filter system has been upgraded. The type of mold found normally occurs in our environment, and its presence indoors may have been due to the roadwork on the Red Hill Expressway.
Legionella bacteria found in the cooling tower are now at acceptable levels. However, the school will be receiving a new cooling tower and upgraded air conditioning unit over the winter.
An Asbestos Study will be carried out within the school. This is done every 3 years. A website will be set up for parents to find information pertaining to this.
Lock Down was called at the school last week. A student was causing difficulties in an area of the school so a lock down was ordered by staff to prevent students from entering the area. The police were called and control was regained within minutes. The incident lasted approx. 8 min from lock down to resolution. Drills are carried out periodically where teachers monitor the behaviour of students. Teachers’ actions are monitored as well. Information of Lock Down procedures is readily available to teachers and supply teachers. A SynerVoice message was sent out regarding this incident.
Administration may determine that a student with behavioural problems is in need of extra help or assessment. There are options such as assessment by a family doctor, chaplain, and school nurse or school social worker. The School Board, not the school itself, may only expel a student. School Administrators must provide documentation. The Board must make arrangements for the student to attend a different school or School Board.
Mr. Brian Coruzzi from Sportscorp will present information on sports uniforms at the November 26 meeting. A Uniform Committee will be set up.
A Safety Audit of the school was carried out. This involved a staff member, a parent and two students.

Chair Report by Mrs. Robinson
A folder containing mail received by Council will be circulated at meetings. This includes the handout from Mrs. Luisa Conti. Council members and parents are encouraged to attend.
Action Item for Mrs. Robinson – Finalize details of the Parent Reaching Out Program and the $1000 grant associated with it. The grant will be used toward a professional speaker, Dr. Colin Sturdy, who will speak about parenting, how to enhance our skills to promote self-esteem in our children, how to better support our children. Council will discuss how to promote this event, such as through churches, elementary schools, and advertising.
There will be a meeting on Nov. 10 after school to discuss fundraising, and which items require funding. One idea is to produce a ‘coupon sheet’ with local vendors. Sheets can be printed for about 50 cents each and sold for $10. We will need many vendors to make this work.
Next meeting will be held Wed. November 26 at 7 pm in the school library.

Legionella: Public Health Dept. found Legionella in cooling towers of school. Clean up was carried out with the strictest standards in order to protect the safety of the BR staff and students. New samples were then taken and results should be available in 3 to 4 weeks. The heating/cooling system was not running at the time the contamination was found as it was between seasons. A SynreVoice message was sent home to parents.
Emergency Preparedness: Fire drills will be carried out during the school day. As well, there will be a Lock-down drill on Sept. 30. There are plans to possibly run a drill during the lunch hour.

All doors are locked except for two doors in the main hallway of the school. Visitors are directed to the Office where they must sign in before entering the school.
Election Day: The school will be used as a polling station on Oct. 4. There will be security on site to prevent voters from walking freely throughout the school.
