SCHOOL LETTER AWARD
 
 
 
CONSTITUTION
 
Preamble: The Bishop Ryan School Letter is one of the most prestigious awards attainable by a student since it recognizes those who exemplify the ideals of our school where faith pride and effort result in excellence. It is awarded only to those who have demonstrated a commitment to our school community through participation, leadership, and striving to be the best one can be in various aspects of school life, including the pursuit of academic excellence, involvement in co-instructional activities and the promotion of Catholic ideals and Celtic Spirit.
1.AWARDS COMMITTEE: The final decision in awarding the Letter shall be left to the Awards Committee, subject to final approval by the Principal. Also, earning sufficient points is not a reason in itself to receive a School Letter.
2.It is the student’s responsibility to apply for a School Letter. Follow the instructions carefully. The application is to be submitted by the student to the awards committee when the required number of points has been accumulated. A teacher’s signature on the application verifies participation or membership on a team or club. The committee using the roster submitted by the supervisor or coach will verify points.
3.Applications must be submitted by the time and date outlined in the agenda book. Usually the first Friday of May at the end of school.
4.Points:
i.                    Points will be awarded under the main divisions: Academic, Athletic and Co-curricular.
ii.                  Athletic and Co-curricular activities must be teacher supervised. Practising on your own does not count.
iii.                A student must have a total of 130 points in his or her four years of Secondary School and be approved by the awards committee. A student may claim no more than 60 points and no less than 10 points in each area.
iv.                Points are allowed on the basis of time consumed and how the time was spent. Ten hours of activity equals ONE point. There is a maximum of 10 points per year per activity.
 5.Academic:
a)       For first class honours in any semester 80% & over: 10 points.
b)      For second class honours in any semester 70 – 79.9%: 7 points
c)      For third class honours in any semester 60 –69.9%: 3 points.
6.Athletic:
Athletics include playing, coaching, timing and video-taping sports events. This also includes cheerleading and steps squad. Points are assigned based on the number of hours of participation at games, practices and meetings.
Intramural Sports:
If an intramural program is run in at Bishop Ryan, participation is 1 point for each sport in which a student is actively engaged.
7.Co-Curricular Activities:
A teacher must supervise activities in order to qualify for points for a School Letter. Make sure you sign in for activities and keep track of activities in which you have participated.
Although a maximum of 10 points is allowed in most areas, in certain cases, extra points may be accumulated. This is left to the discretion of the wards committee.          
 
ELIGIBILITY
A student must have attended Bishop Ryan for at least three years to qualify for a School Letter. Students transferring in from another school may apply for a School Letter but the number of points awarded while attending Bishop Ryan must exceed the number of points given for each category, (Academic, Athletic and Co-curricular) at the previous school. They must have the minimum of 10 points from Bishop Ryan in each category. Christian Service Hours and assignments completed for class may not be granted points towards the school Letter.
 
HOW TO APPLY
Check the Date in your agenda book or on-line for the date the application is due.
 Here’s how:
1.April: Listen for announcements and pick up an application in the main office. 
2.Athletics and Co-curricular - List all the activities in which you have participated since grade nine. Make sure that you include everything. Indicate the name of the supervisor or coach for each activity. If the Coach or supervisor is still at BR have them indicate the number of points. Their initials indicate that you have participated in the activity. Rosters are kept on file.
3.Academics - Make an appointment to have a counsellor assist you with listing your marks or if you have copies of your report cards you may fill out the information yourself. All marks will be verified.
4.Points – Please note that not all activities have the same points. Different members of the same activity may put in different amounts of TIME.
Remember:
The due date for the 2010-2011 school year is May 2, 2011. You must submit your application on time. If the application is late you will receive your Award the following year.
