Teacher recognized for environmental stewardship

On June 8, Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School Teacher Kathy Zadvorny was honoured at the annual Environmentalists of the Year Award ceremony for her dedication to the environment.

Established in 1979, the award recipients are selected by the Hamilton's Environmentalists of the Year Awards Committee in recognition of their commitment to improving the city's environment.

Zadvorny received the Award of Merit for her environmental efforts of the past decade. Her passion for a green planet extends to her school where she acts as an EcoSchool rep and mentor, and an Eco Team facilitator. In addition, she volunteers her time with the Friends of the Eramosa Karst, an organization aimed at conserving the eco system.

Some of the initiatives with which Zadvorny has been involved include growing milkweed and raising Monarch butterflies, placing bird feeders throughout Eramosa Karst Conservation Area, and planting over 900 native trees and shrubs at the Conservation Area along Rymal Road near Bishop Ryan.

Congratulations, Kathy!
