Schools recognize World Suicide Prevention Day Take a minute, change a life

On Friday, September 8th, schools throughout the system will recognize World Suicide Prevention Day, which takes place on Sunday, September 10th.

Each day in Canada, it is estimated that 11 people end their lives and 210 people make a suicide attempt. We know that communities have an important role to play in supporting children, youth, and adults who are vulnerable to suicide. As a Catholic school community, we would like to emphasize this year’s theme, “Take a minute, change a life.” As the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) indicates on its website, “a minute doesn’t sound like that much time, but consider the fact that there are 1,440 minutes in a day. Small moments add up to make a big difference.”

Students will be asked to take one minute of silence to think about positive messages of hope and support that they can offer their fellow students, and ways in which they can encourage a sense of love and belonging within their school communities.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” ~ Jeremiah 29:11
