Demonstration of Learning (DOL)

Tuesday, June 4th, 2019
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
At the beginning of the semester, a letter explaining the Demonstration of Learning Initiative was sent home regarding procedures that would occur in the Grade 9 and 10 Applied and Open level courses with final exams scheduled during the exam week. Courses with in-class final exams will proceed prior to the exam week as they have in the past.
To be eligible to complete the course without writing the final exam**, a student must meet ALL of the following criteria:

• Attendance: The student has a maximum of eight (8) absences or fewer in the full credit course or four (4) or fewer absences in a half-credit course. This does not include any school-related absence (i.e. school trips or athletic events).
• Suspensions: The student has not received a suspension in the semester the course is taken.
• Assignments: The student has completed and submitted all assignments to the teacher for that course by: Friday June 7th, 2019.
• Term Mark (prior to final Exam): The student has achieved an overall term mark of 70% or greater in that course.
**Notwithstanding, any student who meets the criteria may elect to write the exam if the Parent(s)/Guardian(s) feels it is in the student’s best interest.**

On Tuesday June 11th, 2019, students and their Parent(s)/Guardian(s) will be informed by way of a letter if their child has met the above criteria, and whether or not they are eligible to have the Culminating Assignment be a Demonstration of Learning.

At that time, parental permission will be required to allow the use of the mark assessed on the Culminating Assignment in lieu of the final exam. Parents will be required to complete a permission form and to have their child return it to his/her classroom teacher by Friday, June 14th, 2019.

It is essential that the permission form be returned to the classroom teacher by the date indicated Friday June 14th, 2019 in order for your child to be considered for this Demonstration of Learning Initiative. If the permission form is not returned, the student will write the final exam.

Sincerely,

E. Piccioni,
Principal, Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School
