Welcome to 2021 – Happy New Year on behalf of myself and the Bishop Ryan Staff! I hope that you have enjoyed a restful and relaxing Christmas holiday. We are busy preparing for you to resume your schooling with us remotely from home beginning tomorrow, Monday, January 4
. Please review the attached letter to Parents/Guardians that was sent out by the school board last week for initial details.
Below are some key pieces of information that will help you enter this period of remote learning:What is Remote Learning and How Long Will it Be?
Remote learning means that you will be continuing with your Block 4 course and teacher online from the comfort of your own home. Our physical school on Rymal Road East will be closed to students. Ontario has identified that we will be in a period of remote learning from January 4-22. We anticipate returning to in-person learning at Bishop Ryan on Monday, January 25, however, you are encouraged to regularly monitor the news and provincial announcements in the event that there is a change to that.
Remote learning is offered using both Synchronous and Asynchronous lessons. Recall that synchronous learning
happens in real-time whereby you have to virtually attend the lesson and watch/listen along as it occurs. Asynchronous learning
happens on your own time and is often comprised of material that is posted on myClass™ that you can access at a time that is convenient for you. What Will My Remote Class Schedule Look Like?
Unlike last Spring, this period of remote learning requires you to attend a significant amount of mandatory synchronous (real-time) learning everyday. The cohort system has been temporarily suspended
and students from Cohorts A and B will now attend their remote online taught class together every day
. We are continuing with your Block 4 course that just started prior to the Christmas holidays. The schedule for the day will mimic our normal in-person “bell schedule”
8:00 a.m. – 8:05 a.m. Log-in Time
8:05 a.m. – 9:35 a.m. Synchronous Instructional Session #1
9:35 a.m. – 9:50 a.m. Break #1
9:50 a.m. – 11:20 a.m. Synchronous Instructional Session #2
11:20 a.m. – 11:35 a.m. Break #2
11:35 a.m. – 1:05 p.m. Synchronous Instructional Session #3
1:05 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. Lunch
1:50 p.m. – 2:20 p.m. Synchronous Learning
Every Instructional Session will begin with synchronous learning and also include some asynchronous time as well. All students will need to be logged on to myClass™ (see the attachment as a review) and Microsoft Teams™ beginning at 8:00 a.m. Your teacher will contact you providing you with an invitation(s) to join the MS Teams™ class shortly. I also recommend logging into myClass™ this evening as your teacher may post the MS Teams™ invitation link there.Attendance will be taken
by your teacher at the beginning of every Instructional Session. What if I Don’t Have the Technology at Home to Successfully Participate in Remote Learning?
If you require an i-Pad or laptop to learn remotely from home, e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org
. Please note that we have a limited quantity of this technology and as a result have reserved them for students who do not have a digital device in their home that can be used for remote learning. Unfortunately at this time, we are unable to provide devices to students who already have access to a digital device in their homes. Will the First Day Back from Holidays (i.e. January 4) be a Full Day?
Your remote learning Block 4 class will begin on MS Teams™ at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, January 4
. This provides you and your teacher with an opportunity to prepare for remote learning and test your technology. Your Block 4 Teacher will be contacting you via myClass™ or e-mail with an invitation to an MS Teams™ class session and to indicate their daily expectations. I also recommend logging into myClass™ this evening as your teacher may post the MS Teams™ invitation link there. What if I Need Tech Help?
If you require assistance with password log-in troubles, remote learning software (e.g. myClass™ or MS Teams™), or board owned hardware (e.g. an i-Pad or laptop), please first communicate with your teacher as many problems can be remedied with their guidance. For more challenging concerns, go to the Technical Help Support Site found on the HWCDSB Board Website: https://parents.hwcdsb.ca/tech-help
.I Attend the Virtual School – What do I do?
If you are a Bishop Ryan Student who has been attending the Virtual School, you will continue your learning there as per usual. There are no significant changes to the Virtual School’s program or delivery method. Your Virtual School Block 4 Teacher will be touching base with you shortly.Final Thoughts
