Student Information for Our January 5 Remote Learning Start-Up

Welcome to 2022 – Happy New Year on behalf of myself and the Bishop Ryan Staff! I hope that you have enjoyed a restful and relaxing Christmas holiday. We are busy preparing for you to resume your schooling with us remotely from home beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, January 5.

It is important that you review the attached letter to Parents/Guardians that was sent out by the school board this evening for details about remote learning. Many of your questions will be answered by this attached letter.

Below are some key pieces of information that will help you enter this period of remote learning:

What is Remote Learning and How Long Will it Be?

Remote learning means that you will be continuing with your Quadmester 2 classes and teachers online from the comfort of your own home. Our physical school on Rymal Road East will be closed to students. Ontario has identified that we will be in a period of remote learning from at least January 5-14. As of now, we anticipate returning to in-person learning at Bishop Ryan on Monday, January 17, however, you are encouraged to regularly monitor the news and provincial announcements in the event that there is a change to that.

Remote learning is offered using both Synchronous and Asynchronous lessons. Recall that synchronous learning happens in real-time whereby you have to virtually attend the lesson and watch/listen along as it occurs. Asynchronous learning happens on your own time and is often comprised of material that is posted on myClass™ that you can access at a time that is convenient for you.

What Will My Remote Class Schedule Look Like?

This period of remote learning requires you to attend a significant amount of mandatory synchronous (real-time) learning everyday. The schedule for the day will be slightly different from our in-person “bell schedule”:

8:25 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. = Log-in Time
8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. = Period 1 Class
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. = LUNCH TIME
12:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. = Period 2 Class

Every Period will begin with synchronous learning and also include some asynchronous time as well. All students will need to be successfully logged on to myClass™ and Microsoft Teams™ at 8:30 a.m. Your teacher will contact you providing you with an invitation(s) to join the MS Teams™ class shortly via your school Outlook™ e-mail account or your school myClass™ e-mail. I strongly recommend you log into myClass™ this evening as your teacher may post the MS Teams™ invitation link there.

Attendance will be taken by your teacher at the beginning of every Period. Your teacher will also build in a break(s) during the period.

What if I Don’t Have the Technology at Home to Successfully Participate in Remote Learning?

If you require an i-Pad or laptop to learn remotely from home, e-mail us at Please note that we have a limited quantity of this technology and as a result have reserved them for students who do not have a digital device in their home that can be used for remote learning. Unfortunately at this time, we are unable to provide devices to students who already have access to a digital device in their homes.

Support Services to Assist You

I understand that once again we are embarking on an unfamiliar journey that will present itself with exciting opportunities to grow as well as some stressful challenges. I believe in your ability to do this successfully! You are ready for this period of remote learning – you have the skill set and the support from our talented staff. Take it one day at a time, as we all are.

Our Guidance Counsellors are on standby to assist you where needed. Remember that you can book an appointment with your Counsellor on mySite™. Our helpful Social Worker is also regularly available by telephone or e-mail to those of you that have been working with her. Your Student Success team can be found on myClass™ and is eager to support your academic needs. Of course, for all other questions, concerns or for issues that you are unsure who to contact, please e-mail us at and we will connect you to the right person.

All the best as you begin tomorrow online!
